| | Kalaripayattu is a martial and healing
art of Kerala dating back to circa 6th
century. Through a traditional system of bodily and mental development, this art
seeks to cultivate not only a powerful physical warrior but more importantly,
a person of deep inner self-knowledge and humility.
| |
| | Today Kalaripayattu is practiced throughout the world
and has been recognized as a cultural treasure of Kerala by the Government
of India. Traditional masters still instruct disciples in combative and spiritual
training. They also serve as doctors for all types of ailments, healing through
the ancient science of Ayurvedic Medicine.
The kalari (physical location where the training occurs) is an important
center in the daily life of Kerala. It plays an important role by being the focal
point for several neighboring villages, where the Gurukkal or Master nourishes
the entire community and keeps the culture alive through Salsangam (discourse),
and discussions between kalaripaypattu practitioners and the villagers or town
people. | | |
